LED matrix display control

Hello guys, welcome back to my blog. Today we are going to talk about an interesting topic for everyone. That is LED module control. The LED bulbs included in the LED matrix display. We can make this LED matrix in the required sizes at home. It takes a lot of time and effort. But if you have time please do it by hand. In doing so, we can expand our knowledge. Today we are using an 8 by 8 LED matrix display for our project. You can buy it in the market. Let’s see how to connect LED bulbs in the matrix display.

The 8 by 8 LED display includes eight anodes pins and 8 cathode pins. This type of LED matrix display control requires 16 pins on the Arduino board. It is not easy. It is also not possible to control displays with large LED bulbs. We can use a special method for this problem. That is, using shift registers.
What is a shift register?
A shift register is an IC. This contains a memory that can be referred to as a register. These are available as bit 4, bit 8, and bit 16. This registers stores only 0 or 1. Those values are then shifted forward.
Let’s use the MAX7219 shift register for the project we are doing today. It includes a 16-bit register. This shift register controls the eight anode pins and the eight cathode pins. For this, IC control we need three pins on the Arduino board. A board with IC and LED matrix display is available in the market. Let’s use it for this project.

This module has 10 upper and lower pins. The bottom 5 pins are used to provide input for this module. Also, the output is available through the top 5 pins. Do you want to connect to another LED matrix display? Please attach these 5 pins. Two of the following five pins are used to power this module and the other three pins are used to supply input. For that, You can use the digital pins on the Arduino board. Okay, let’s go to today’s project. The required components are as follows.

Components

Let’s do it step by step.
Step 1
let’s Identify these components.
Arduino Uno
You can be used any other Arduino board.
Matrix LED display
This component is described above.

Jumper wire

You can be used five FEMALE to MALE jumper wires for this project.
Step 2
Connect these components according to the circuit below.

Step 3

Let’s look at the code.

To work with this we first need a special library file. What is the library? Click for this. You must first download this library file using the link below. Library download. Put it into the Arduino IDE as shown below.
#include <MaxMatrix.h>
All the letters on the keyboard are placed in the CH array. They are converted into binary codes.
This code informs what are the connect pins this LED matrix display and how many displays connect to the Arduino board.
#define DIN  4   // DIN pin of MAX7219 module
#define CLK  2   // CLK pin of MAX7219 module
#define CS 3    // CS pin of MAX7219 module
#define displays 1//number of displays
MaxMatrix dis(DIN, CS, CLK, displays);
byte buffer[10];
You can put the words you want to display in this array.
char text[] = “Enter your text “; // Scrolling text
This void setup code initialize this LED matrix display.
void setup() {
  dis.init(); // module initialize
  dis.setIntensity(15); // dot matix intensity 0-15
}
This code display words and scrolling those words.
// Display=the extracted characters with scrolling
void printCharWithShift(char c, int shift_speed) {
  if (c < 32) return;
  c -= 32;
  memcpy_P(buffer, CH + 7 * c, 7);
  dis.writeSprite(32, 0, buffer);
  dis.setColumn(32 + buffer[0], 0);
  for (int i = 0; i < buffer[0] + 1; i++)
  {
    delay(shift_speed);
    dis.shiftLeft(false, false);
  }
}
// Extract the characters from the text string
void printStringWithShift(char* s, int shift_speed) {
  while (*s != 0) {
    printCharWithShift(*s, shift_speed);
    s++;
  }
The void loop code is called the ‘printStringWithShift‘ function below.
void loop() {
  printStringWithShift(text, 100); // (text, scrolling speed)
}

Step 4
Select board and port.
Step 5
Upload and enjoy this code.
